Not The Longest Word In The Book

Not a long one, this post. I spent most of today researching for a potential new job, so broadly, I just wanted to talk about the job process out of university and get some stuff out of my head.

As it turns out, doing a degree didn't help as much as doing everything else around it - the part-time work, the charity work, and dozen-ish mod projects. The degree feels more like a formality at this point - I'm applying to jobs where I'm about as qualified as I can be, but still not getting it because I need some form of professional experience...which I can only get by getting a job. I had a similar experience to this when trying to get a part-time job a few years ago, and that was applying to retail. That took me six months of grinding away at applications everywhere before somewhere finally took the dive and I got a job that, I think, did me a lot of good, both mentally and monetarily. I had been hoping the degree would make that searching process a little less severe, but, well, I started in March.

This upcoming interview might be the one, and I hope it is because the place looks really cool, but it's difficult to commit to putting all my eggs in that particular basket because of past experience teaching me not to get my hopes up at all. I worry that the day I spent today frantically researching everything I can, out of both excitement and out of a concern to do as well as I can, might end up being another one of those days that ended up going nowhere. It's not a massive worry - I'll do my best, and it'll work or it won't work, but it's still in the back of my mind. With any luck, the next job post after this one will be a bit less nebulous, and a bit more positive.
